Being a responsible cat owner involves more than just deciding to take a lovely early morning drive to your local shelter. Once you arrive there, it is quite easy to allow any number of needy and deserving kitties to steal your heart and to select one (or more!) for your very own. It is true cats are pretty low-maintenance. Food, shelter, water and litter are their basic needs. But there are other, equally important requirements which must be provided. The bottom line: Being a responsible cat owner – or caregiver, or guardian or whatever other politically-correct term you like – takes time, effort, education, commitment and the financial resources to pull it all together.

Plan ahead

It's always best to do your homework BEFORE you bring your new kitty home. Doing your homework means researching how to properly introduce your new kitten to your resident cat(s). Making sure that the new kitten or cat has been properly vet checked prior to any contact with other animals in the house. Don't be caught off–guard when your cat shows you what feline behavior is all about. Remember that cats act out of instinct, and if you feel that the behavior is unacceptable, it could be the result of you not understanding cat behavior, or being able to successfully read your cat’s body language. Remember, the responsibility lies with you – educating yourself about cat care, making the appropriate choices and knowing your cat’s normal routines and behaviors will go a long way towards allowing both of you to enjoy a long, problem-free life together.
